The best standalone Great Abyss in the history of this band. Full stop.

Gangster begins with an ambient/space intro, followed by an extended four-on-the-floor intro jam. I enjoyed this, even if it’s somewhat short. The next three jams (into I-Man, I-Man first jam, I-Man second jam) can all be skipped as there’s nothing novel going on here. The third jam in I-Man has an absolutely awesome groove, buoyed by Brownsteins bassline, which weaves in and out of Allen’s driving kick pattern. Magner has neat textural work in the upper registers, utilizing plucky bell synths and a healthy dose of delay. I’m honestly not sure what Barber is doing during this jam as there is no guitar. He comes back in near the end of the jam, but before that I think he was doing the weird little arpeggiated patch. I’m not sure if he had his MIDI keyboard at this point, but sounds like that’s what he was doing. The last I-Man jam is another space jam, and I literally always approve of them doing this. Love it so much. I wanted to like this Pilin jam so much the entire band is getting weird here, and they get pretty far outside the box. Unfortunately this particular iteration of weirdness just isn’t all that interesting, and feels more random and scattershot. Even though Abyss literally has the starting progression from the start, given that they noodle around before the beep boops for 3-4 minutes, I’ll count this an intro jam. Forgettable and type 1, but a jam nonetheless.

Strobelights begins the second set with a solid dance jam. Barber’s tone here is absolutely beautiful, and his playing is patient and restrained. The entire Home Again jam is one of those “more fun if you were there” things. Guys from Umphrey’s McGee come out, and there’s a happy birthday to Magner song sung. On tape this is pretty boring. 7-11 first jam gets a little out there, but they quickly reel themselves back in. The second 7-11 jam is pretty straightforward, but I enjoyed it. Lots of solid play here from Marc. DTTB encore is forgettable, and Spy is of course jamless.

Highlights: I-Man (3*, 4**), Strobelights, 7-11 (2)
