7-11, in its earliest stage, almost feels like a symbolic statement on the band. It debuted 3/11/00, the first show after Marc Brownstein was fired, a show rife with experimentation, new ideas and techniques. A morose breakup song with a resigned yet optimistic and somewhat fuck-it-all refrain seems very fitting for this mood.

Before the debut, Barber told the audience that the song came from “a very emotional time… I was working a 7-11, and then I got back to 7-11 and the song was in the rotation. We’re going to play it once. Only today.” Shortly before its second performance, Barber told the audience that people had been telling him to keep it in the rotation.

Perhaps no song changed as much from its debut as 7-11. The earliest versions of the song, called “Bring Your Ass to the Party” until its first rework in 2001, were considerably slower and the lyrics much less polished and rawer than later versions. There is a poignant personalness to the lyrics in the 2000 versions not present in the post-rework versions: take for example the line, “girl, I even wrote a rock opera for you, it wasn’t enough, it wasn’t enough.” The distinct “I’m gonna go out and jam” refrain is present and largely the same as modern versions, but the pre-chorus is absent and the verses are very different.

Bring Your Ass to the Party was played six times before being shelved, five without Marc Brownstein. The jam section, like the song itself, was considerably rawer than with modern iterations, often resulting in wild exploratory jams. The best example of this is the only version played with the full band before the song was reworked, 8/26/00 at Camp Bisco, sandwiched between the debut of Home Again. The segues into and out of Bring Your Ass to the Party put this segment in easy contention for the best versions ever played of both songs.

After Camp Bisco, Bring Your Ass to the Party was shelved until it was debuted again, reworked and rebranded as 7-11, on 6/27/01 at the private show at Lisa Klein’s house. This show also featured the debuts of The Tunnel and the Spy rework. The differences in the song structure are numerous and profound. The song was much faster post-rework, and the lyrics no longer make reference to a breakup. The composition is considerably more fleshed out as well. The “maybe all that you want to be is all that you have to be” pre-chorus/ending and the “towel” bridge were both added--and, in fact, prior to the rework, the song didn’t really have an ending at all.

7-11 became a staple of the fall tour of 2001, which is replete with standout versions of the song, most notably 9/9/01. The band also became more adventurous with the song structure. It was split up for the first time on 8/8/01, split up at the middle (or towel section) on 9/14/01 and 9/15/01, and inverted on 12/1/01.

7-11 remained a staple of the band’s catalog after the rework, not disappearing from the rotation for more than 40 shows, however it still was not fully finished. 3/9/02 is a particularly interesting version, featuring both the first verse referencing a breakup and the distinctive heavy intro riff; the former was not standard until 8/7/02 and the latter not until 9/28/02. Additionally, the Perfume version, often called Wawa, was introduced on 5/28/03. Despite the fact that it was played only the once, it has remained a popular request ever since.

The song remained solid for the remainder of Sammy’s tenure, particularly in the fall of 2002. 9/28/02 was the first three part version and 11/9/02 the second and final until 1/4/20. Other significant versions from this era include 10/19/02 and 10/26/02.

7-11 remained in the rotation after Allen joined the band, but over the years the ending became rarer and rarer. Allen played the ending for the first time on 10/19/07, whereupon it reentered the rotation sporadically. It was played two more times in 2007, twice in 2008, twice in 2009, then shelved again until 2014.

7-11 was especially strong in the golden years of 2.0, 2007 and 2009. 10/26/07 stands head and shoulders above the others from the year, although they’re all fairly consistent. 2009 was possibly the best year for the song; the most notable versions include 2/25/09, 6/4/09, 9/25/09, and 10/2/09. The song was only played three times in 2010, but all three are worthwhile.

The song remained in fairly steady rotation in the setbreak era with at least one or two per year. It became fairly interesting again in 2018, with two massive contenders for GOAT status: 5/24/18, a type two full version complete with outro, and 12/28/18, an unfinished version with two lengthy jams including one of the longest towel jams ever.

After setbreak was declared to be over, the song became somewhat more of a rarity, appearing only twice per year in 2020-2022 and just once in 2023. Of these versions, 4/8/22 is notable as being the fourth three-part 7-11 ever, and 10/16/21 is worth hearing for a particularly strong towel jam.

Ladies was first played by Electron on 8/18/00, debuted on the same night as the full Chemical Warfare Brigade opera, along with Floodlights, Shelby Rose and Confrontation. The lyrics are largely the same, but the structure of the song is slightly different: there are shouts of “give it up! give it up!” in the introduction and before the jam, and there is a brief synth jam in between the verses. The jam in this Electron version is also considerably slower and mellower than in Biscuits versions, and there is no peak; rather, the jam just resolves back into the same verse from the intro.

The first and only Biscuits version of Ladies in 2000 is tightened up considerably from the Electron version. It is much faster than the Electron version, and the peak has that much needed Barber “oomph.” Although slightly slower than modern versions, in all other ways the song is virtually indistinguishable.

Ladies was played a whopping 27 times each in 2001 and 2002, the years of the song’s first golden age. It was a staple of the early spring tour, and was mostly played standalone, although it was split on its second performance on 3/22/01 and segued into on 4/12/01 and 4/20/01. It was inverted for the first time at the Bisco Knights festival on 8/25/01. In the fall tour the song became a powerhouse, with standout versions including the set closing standalone on 9/8/01 and the massive inverted version on 9/22/01.

2002 was the year Ladies really took off. 4/25/02 is the first dyslexic version, and the standout version from the spring tour. The summer tour included many excellent versions, including 7/26/02 and 8/11/02, but the real apex for the song came in the fall tour, with two legendary versions on 10/4/02 and 10/18/02.

Ladies became less common after 2002, and although the 2003 versions aren’t as legendary as the late 2001 or 2002 versions, there are a couple with unmistakable merit, such as the unfinished 4/25/03 or the split-up 11/28/03 (which was a part of the fourth complete performance of the Chemical Warfare Brigade. Ladies was only played seven more times with Sammy after 2003.

When Allen joined the band, Ladies became a catalog staple once again. Its second golden age lines up nicely with the second golden age of the band overall, beginning in mid-2007 and lasting into early 2010. The Astronaut > Ladies (><) > Astronaut from 11/19/06 is arguably the first great Ladies with Allen, but the spectacular 5/27/07 Ladies > O Fortuna > Spacebird (><) > Ladies and the over 35 minute Ladies > Gangster from 10/23/07 definitively assured Ladies’ place in the pantheon of trance-fusion juggernauts.

Ladies remained a powerhouse staple through 08 (standout versions including 1/16/08, 4/18/08, 5/24/08, 6/13/08 and 12/30/08), but the song hit another level in 2009, when it was played 21 times (the most of any year since 2002). In a year of furious lightspeed trance jams, Ladies flourished. Notable versions including 2/15/09, 4/24/09, and 6/25/09 are hailed as some of the best ever. The song was played twice in 2010 before wristgate, on 1/29/10 and 3/17/10, and both versions are excellent.

Ladies remained a setlist staple in the setbreak era, and in addition to the numerous versions played during this time, the band frequently used a Ladies style jam to get from A to B in this era. In fact, the year where Ladies was most common was 2012, when it was played on average once every 3.3 shows. Notable versions from the setbreak era include the 1/26/14 Tractorbeam version, 3/26/16, 6/02/16, and 8/20/16.

In the post-setbreak era, Ladies continues to be a setlist staple. It is still frequently played inverted, although well-known exceptions include the set bookending 9/23/23 and the dyslexic 1/28/24 (part of a full set palindrome). Ladies is one of the most frequently played Biscuits songs, appearing on average once every five to six shows since its debut. It has only disappeared from the rotation for more than a dozen shows a few times, and never for more than sixteen shows. It is an indisputably important part of the Biscuits’ catalog.

Supposedly written after Barber told his convenience store boss to fuck off, Aceetobee was one of the earliest originals debuted by the Biscuits, alongside Barfly, Pat & Dex, and Basis. It features an intro, a verse section, a composed bridge, a vamp on the middle section with a descending riff, and a jam section built around a captivating, uplifting riff.

In the early trance-fusion era, the most interesting Aceetobee jams were intro jams segued into from other songs. One of the earliest Biscuits jams of note is 11/18/97 Vassillios > Aceetobee. These two were also paired together on 8/28/98 at the Wetlands to similarly great effect.

Aceetobee began to develop into a more full-fledged jam vehicle in 1999. 3/14/99 was the first Aceetobee to divert from the usual formula. Instead of a triumphant rock jam, the main jam was brooding and atmospheric until turning on a dime back into Aceetobee. 3/27/99 is another lauded version, mainly for the type two intro jam.

Spring 1999 saw some of the first significant developments in Aceetobee, notably the expansion of the hitherto underutilized “first jam” section. 4/10/99 (another contender for greatest) is the first version to be split in the first jam section, sandwiching the underutilized Smoothie King (and featuring another fantastic intro jam and soaring main jam). 4/24/99 is perhaps the first Aceetobee to feature a lengthy first jam, one that is, in fact, nearly as long as the second or “main” jam. After these developments, Aceetobee remained largely stagnant for the remainder of the year, but some standout versions include 9/20/99 and 9/28/99. Beyond these, Aceetobee was mainly of interest for the jams into the song rather than the jams in the song itself. For some excellent segues into Aceetobee, see 5/29/99, 9/15/99 and 10/9/99.

From 2000 to 2002, Aceetobee did not develop much. Despite this, there are plenty of standout versions from this era. Aceetobees in this era were consistent if fairly predictable, and fans of the song have a variety of solid versions to choose from. Some of these are 7/12/00 (played with Jordan Crisman on bass), 8/26/00, 11/10/00, 9/19/01 (a beautiful, spacey 27 minute version), 12/31/01, 8/13/02 (first inverted), 8/18/02 (actually goes type two in the main jam) and 10/5/02 (from the legendary Haymaker festival).

The second show of 03 featured a gorgeous, fleshed out Aceetobee, and it seems like every version played that year was an attempt to top the last. For this reason, just about every Aceetobee played in 03 is spectacular and worth hearing. The highlights are 4/4/03, 4/25/03, 9/29/03, and 11/29/03. Two additional highlights merit further discussion: 7/26/03, spectacular in its own right, is the second inverted version, and is inverted middle > end > beginning unlike the 02 version which is inverted end > beginning > middle. 10/23/03 is the first ever techno Aceetobee; it was played at a Perfume show, but the techno Aceetobee was played a few times at standard Biscuits shows.

In 2003, Aceetobee was played more frequently than any year since 1999. 2004-2005 Aceetobee was relegated to a more secondary role. 11/27/04 stands out as a stellar version for any era, and 8/27/05 sandwiches an inverted Nughuffer in a poignant moment in Sammy’s last show.

When Allen joined the band, Aceetobee became considerably rarer, and was played almost always as a standalone, and frequently as a set closer. It had a brief mini-renaissance beginning in July 2007. 7/8/07 features Aceetobee inside a Bazaar Escape sandwich (rare in itself), and 7/13/07 is an excellent version, with an Aceetobee > Pilin’ it Higher > Aceetobee sandwich stuck in the middle of a Crystal Ball palindrome. 10/16/07 features an excellent type two jam in the main section, and 11/4/07 Aceetobee > Great Abyss > Aceetobee is maybe the best version of the year.

After a strong 2007, Aceetobee was only played twice in 2008, 4/18/08 and 6/6/08. Both of these versions are very solid. It may have ran out of steam from being played so infrequently, as the 09 versions were generally not as strong as the ones from 07-08. 7/1/09 is probably the only standout version from this year, and there are many versions that are the weakest part of significant segments (4/23/09, 6/25/09, 10/4/09).

Aceetobee continued to play second fiddle to the major heavy hitters throughout the rest of 2.0 and the setbreak era. On 11/22/09, the song Catalyst developed out of an Aceetobee first jam. The Aceetobee > Catalyst > Aceetobee pairing further limited Aceetobee’s jam potential, and was played a total of five times besides the debut.

Besides the revisiting of the techno Aceetobee on 6/8/10, there were very few significant versions of the song between 2009 and 2017. In 2017 the song had another mini renaissance; it was played on average once every six shows, more frequently than any year since 2011. Each of these versions is worth hearing. 4/29/17 at the Capitol Theatre features a fantastic split Aceetobee with a drawn out intro jam segued from Papercut. Aceetobee was inverted for the third time ever on 5/28/17, and the middle was played at the Ogden on 6/1/17, completing this first and only split inversion of the song. The Aceetobee > Abyss > Aceetobee pairing was dusted off, to great success, on 9/21/17 at Irving Plaza, and Aceetobee was segued into from the Mario theme, and used to sandwich an excellent set of video game music, on 12/31/17 at the Playstation Theatre. Easily the best version of the year, and possibly the best version with Allen, was the techno Aceetobee played 11/17/17 at the Fillmore in Denver.

After this mini-renaissance, Aceetobee remained a once-or-twice-per-year rarity. The song rarely delivers show-defining highlights, but there are still occasional versions worth checking out: 9/16/23 is the strongest since 11/17/17, and 12/1/23 the first techno version since that date.

Astronaut was debuted at the unannounced Boom Boom Room show on 8/8/01, along with Coat. Instrumentally, this version does not differ much from modern versions, but the lyrics bear little resemblance to the finished song. The basic structure of the first half of the song is the same as modern versions, two intro riffs, verse-chorus-verse-chorus, a peak, and a bridge consisting of a simple descending/ascending riff. In the first version, the bridge (commonly known as the Suspended in the Air, or SITA, section) is followed by a third verse. The chorus is not repeated, and the song ends rather abruptly without a jam.

The second version of Astronaut is nearly three times as long as the first. It was played at the band’s final show at the Wetlands Preserve, on 9/2/01. It is a considerably tighter version, and the new lyrics are much closer to finalized (they would remain largely unchanged throughout the rest of the year). After the SITA section, the band plays the peak section again (although Barber doesn’t play the peak in this version, he does in others), then an extended jam that returns to the peak. The band attempts to return to a final chorus after the second peak, but there is considerable confusion and this second version is aborted.

Astronaut was arguably played a third time on 9/9/01, although this is almost never counted. As Spacebirdmatingcall ends, a definite SITA jam is used to segue into House Dog Party Favor. Although this isn’t counted as a performance of Astronaut, it is fairly significant as the first jamming on the SITA section. Astronaut was played another ten times in 2001. Of these, seven had outro jams, with the band dropping back into a SITA-esque jam immediately following the closing chords.

After its performance over the 2001 New Year’s run, Astronaut was not played again until 4/4/02, as the first part of the encore. Here the lyrics are roughly 99% identical to modern versions, and the main jam develops more organically out of the SITA section (the “peak section” that the band would play after SITA is dropped). This is arguably the first split Astronaut, but the Peter Gunn in the Astronaut jam is sometimes notated as a tease. The first split Astronaut otherwise was begun on 8/9/02 and was finished on 8/11/02, and the first (and for years only) inverted Astronaut was 10/23/02. The 2001 style Astronaut outro was played a couple times in Spring 02, but after 5/1/02 it was retired.

Throughout the Sammy years, Astronaut remained a fairly regular staple in the catalog. Its most common year was 2002 when it appeared on average once every five shows. Astronaut was known for mellow housey jams, although the Sammy years produced some monster versions. 10/5/02 is usually considered the best of this, and perhaps of any, era. 9/19/01 is a significantly exploratory early version, and 4/18/03 is excellent as well, spawning a passage of gorgeous blissco that evolves to a triumphant inverted Confrontation. 5/31/03 saw the return of the outro jam, though played differently (without the SITA section) than it was in 01-02, and 7/25/03 is a unique version that is split up between the first and second verse.

After 2003, Astronaut became less common, and was only played six more times with Sammy in 2004-2005. 10/1/04, though nothing special musically, is significant as the first to be split up in the SITA section. 3/25/05 features the first substitution of “Yo Girl You Crazy” for “Take Me Too” in the chorus, but 8/26/05 is probably the best from this era, especially for the excellent outro jam into Stone (significant as both the first modern Astronaut outro and the only real jam into Stone).

When Allen joined the band, Astronaut was given a fresh start, and was played considerably more frequently: from 2006-2009, Astronaut was played on average once every 5-6 shows, or about as frequently as it was played in 2002. The spacey electronic style of 06-07 Biscuits proved fertile ground for the development of the SITA section as a jam vehicle, and pretty soon Astronaut was a two jam song.

Astronaut was one of the stronger songs in Allen’s early repertoire, with standout versions as early as 4/27/06 and 5/28/06. The fall of 2006 was a particularly strong tour for Astronaut. Important versions include 11/4/06 (featuring a powerful main jam and an even stronger outro jam into a Moshi Fameus drum section), 12/7/06 (the second inverted version, and first in over four years) and, most importantly, 11/19/06.

Astronaut reached its zenith in the peak years of 2.0, 2007-2009. After consistently strong versions in the early part of the year, particularly 7/8/07 (a 22 minute standalone if you include the hypnotic intro jam), the band took Astronaut to a new level on 10/9/07, with a spectacular 30+ minute version. Widely considered one of the best ever, the 10/9/07 Astronaut elevated the song to a new level, and landmark versions were performed on 11/1/07 (another best ever contender), 10/26/07 (spicy full version with a powerful main jam) and 10/19/07 (the third inverted version).

2008 was a little more hit-or-miss for Astronaut, but still produced some more than solid versions. 3/19/08 features the first ever three part Astronaut, evidence of the tremendous development of the SITA section as a jam vehicle during the Allen years. Easily the most significant Astronaut of 2008 is the monstrous 30+ minute standalone that opened the day set of Camp Bisco VII on 7/19/08. Universally acclaimed, this Astronaut features two extended and thematic jams, and is considered by many to be the finest Astronaut ever played. A strong dyslexic version at Holidaze, on 12/12/08 and 12/14/08, and its use as the countdown on 12/31/08, cemented 2008 as an important year for Astronaut.

Along with fall tour 2007, the other contender for the strongest era for Astronaut is 2009. Astronaut was solid for the whole year, but was especially strong in the spring and summer. In this era the SITA jam took on a life as its own; previously relegated to mellow and spacey type one status, the SITA jam was by the middle of the year capable of producing type two ragers. The SITA jam section became so strong that Astronauts split in the SITA section became more common than Astronauts split the traditional way: beginning with 4/20/09, of the eight split Astronauts of the year, five are split at the SITA jam. The whole year produced significant Astronauts, such as 2/14/09, 2/28/09, 9/17/09, 9/26/09 and 10/8/09; however, it is the Astronauts from spring and summer, such as 4/3/09 (notable mainly for the SITA jam), 4/20/09, 6/4/09 and 6/27/09, that are worth checking out.

After a few immensely strong years, the star of Astronaut began to fade in 2010 and 2011, when it became more of a rarity (played on average once every 7 shows in 2010 and once every 10-11 shows in 2011). Although it was never shelved, Astronaut’s longest gaps from the rotation occurred in this era, when it wasn’t played for twenty shows between 6/5/10 to 9/8/10 and 12/27/10 to 7/2/11. September 2010 featured a particularly interesting version in which the beginning and end were played on 9/8/10 and were “completed” by a performance of the SITA section on 9/11/10. The version from Camp Bisco X on 7/8/11, which bookends a large palindrome set, is worth checking out as well.

Astronaut became more of a frequent setlist staple in the destination era. In 2017, Astronaut was played a whopping seven times, or on average once every 4-5 shows (making 2017 the year Astronaut was played most frequently), but in 2018 Astronaut was played only three times, or on average once every 12-13 shows (making 2018 the year Astronaut was played the least frequently). The 2017 versions, particularly 2/3/17 and 5/26/17, are standouts from the setbreak era, and 11/2/18, while notably sloppy, features a great theme that builds to the ending. 2019 features a few unique uses of Astronaut, including 1/25/19 and 7/20/19 where parts of Astronaut were "mashed up" with other songs, and one version, 12/27/19, that is considered among the best versions of the decade.

little finger workout.....I've got some more of this tabbed, but it's
trapped on my crippled computer....might drop it at a later date.

It's the bass melody toward the beginning, which is a recurring theme on
all three instruments throughout. You can play it as is on guitar, but
it would definitely not be the ideal position. I leave it to you to
figure out what would be.
