Stone Waltz opens the show, and Barber gets as demented as ever. Munchkin has a brief foray into a more melancholy trance theme before returning to type one. The ending is explosive. Triumph remains pretty stuck in the mud throughout the whole jam, which is type one Triumph until it reaches type one Morph. Still, there’s some pretty cool atmosphere as the band reaches Morph territory and the Morph ending is solid as well. Spaga is a tremendous version. The jam begins with a haunting theme that builds up to a thunderous crescendo and a faster-than-usual peak section that Barber nevertheless manages to nail. However, there isn’t really a second jam or outro; instead, we get a short Magner solo and a DJ segue into Voices. Voices has a brief jam that never leaves type one, but delivers a huge peak.

Story of the World is short and standard. Astronaut is easily the best version yet. The groove-oriented theme builds to a huge type two bliss peak before returning to Astronaut territory. Shem-Rah Boo has a short but fiery acid trance jam, and drop segues into Down to the Bottom. The jam out of Down to the Bottom begins as driving trance but settles down in tempo into a sinister passage. An excellent theme emerges, pulsating and thrumming and driven by first Magner and then Barber to its conclusion. It shifts towards bliss very gradually, but by the 10-11 minute mark we are fully there. The band builds to a gorgeous Confrontation ending. Confrontation is inverted but its potential is squandered as the band essentially drops into a Spectacle intro right out of the gate. It kind of sets the tone for the rest of the show. Spectacle, of course, is jamless. Floodlights has a drum solo, so…yeah. The rest of the jam is standard, with more rock god Barber. Plan B is standard, Bring it on Home is terrible, and Radiator actually rules, but it’s too short to do much.

2/5. Astronaut and Down to the Bottom merit repeat listens. Spaga, Voices and Munchkin are all worth hearing.

Stray Observations: Story of the World has a Sister Judy’s fakeout.

Track Notes

    Astronaut

Though it’s not the longest Astronaut of the year, it may very well be the most thematic. The groove is focused and thematic, and builds to a large, unconventionally blissful peak before returning to Astronaut.

  • S2
    Down To The Bottom

Fast-paced trance right out of the gate, it settles into a drawn-out and sinister theme before building back up to Confrontation.
