Larry Chasnoff, Marc, and a mutual friend of ours, Keith Koslov, all spent their summers growing up together in upstate NY at a place called Schroon Lake. \r

I went to high school with Keith and knew Marc as his annoying prep school friend, way too soft for us public school Brooklyn thugs. Then a bunch of us went to see Phish in Sugarbush in 95, and Marc started telling about this band he was in, and I started telling him about this idea I had for a book. \r

Walking around the lots a kid from Penn recognized Marc from his band and got all excited. I thought to myself, "hmmm, if the book thing doesn't work out, maybe I can ride Brownstein's coattails a little." \r

A few months later, as the Biscuits toiled in relative obscurity, we came out with the first Pharmer's Almanac. Only about 6 people worked on it, but we wanted to make it look more like a community project, so we put a lot of fake names in the staff box. It was a mix of names of people from Schoon Lake (Nick Weiss) and completely absurd names like Harvey Klopstein, Tariq Ali and Shep Williams. \r

When Marc and Keith saw the book a few months later, they thought the fake names were hysterical. While I wasn't there, I assume they spent the next few hours making fun of Chasnoff and I on every possible level. And at some point Keith pulled out a guitar. The rest was history. \r

So that's where the song came from. ("Klopstein and Cabot/ we just won't have it/we know exactly who you are/Tariq and Shep Williams/ pages we'll fill'em/ but phony names will only go so far.) \r

I was all excited that I had a song with my name in it until people started coming up to me and asking "Hey, why did you get sued by Phish?" \r

I want to state, for the record, that we never were sued by Phish, never threatened to be sued by Phish, and never had any legal issues with Phish regarding the Almanac. Every interaction we've had with management has been positive. \r

We caught a lot of grief in the early years from about a dozen people on rec.music.Phish (I know, what a shocker, someone getting grief on an Internet discussion group) but we never got the same from management. \r

I'm not actually sure where the "You're getting sued/bummer dude" line came from, but I think it had to do with the fake names or maybe some of the flack we were getting on the Internet. \r

The Almanac ended up selling about 70,000 copies, but at some point I got tired of going to Phish shows and decided it was a lot more fun to see the Disco Biscuits. \r

Although its lyrics were never cerebral, Bernstein & Chasnoff connects the band to greater jamband lore. Musically the song is not much more complicated: There are two verses, each followed by a chorus, a bridge and chorus, a jam section, and a triumphant ending. At various points in its history, the ending has contained a bonus section (referred to as “Smell The Funk” only after it had been shelved).\r

For its first year, B&C did not contain any jamming of note (refer to 1/30/97 for some truly bizarre sound effects in the pre-Trancefusion era). Trancefusion era versions of 97 (of which 11/17 and 11/18 are extant) do little to suggest the song’s eventual heavy hitter potential. Beginning early in 1998, the song became a vehicle for some of the band’s most interesting early experimentations. 2/26/98 is of particular note, a 25-minute version that contains elements of what would make the song great. Even more significant is 3/21/98, the “Techno B&C,” and what is considered to be the first “Perfume version” of any song. The song remained strong, if slightly less noteworthy, for the remainder of 1998. Already its M.O. was becoming pretty clearly established—the song would regularly depart from blissful type one territory for spacey, sinister territory, and was the earliest example of this style of exploratory jamming.\r

One of the first jams of 1999 was a B&C jam, in the early morning hours of January 1. This B&C > Nughuffer was likely the greatest example of pure Trancefusion yet played at the time. The song stayed strong through 1999 (a high water mark for both the band and the song), with standout versions played on 4/24, 4/30, 5/5, and 9/11 of that year. In particular, the latter two are frequently cited as the strongest versions of the song.\r

The band took a hiatus from B&C during its author’s departure from the band, but it returned with a vengeance at Camp Bisco, split-up dyslexically over 8/25/00 and 8/26/00. Despite the fewer shows played in 2000, there is no shortage of strong B&Cs from the fall tour. Of these 10/27 is thoroughly unique, and a sleeper choice for best ever, while 12/28/00 is more reminiscent of the classic 1999 style B&C.\r

After 2000, B&C faded a bit into the background, although some standout versions do exist from this era. 4/24/01 received some attention for its inclusion in Steele’s Picks, 9/6/01 contains some fantastic fall 2001 jamming and one of the early Sound 1s, and 10/5/02 is remarkably strong (of course, as is everything from that show). 11/29/03 is a lesser-known but very interesting version, which may be the first to be jammed out of the bridge rather than the main jam section.\r

B&C was played just thrice in 04 and once in 05 before Allen joined the band. After a few versions in the winter and spring shows, it was absent for nearly the whole of 06, from 4/26 until 12/29. The 12/29 version is a much-loved mashup with Joy to the World, and features the return of the Smell the Funk section, shelved in January 1999 and busted out only once on 5/5/01. It would be played on every 07 version and then shelved again indefinitely.\r

2007 would be B&C’s second golden era, as nearly every version from that year is excellent and highly regarded. After the fairly standard Jam Cruise version, it was split three ways for the first time at the legendary Starland Ballroom run on 2/17, which featured numerous debuts, Allen first-timers, and bustouts. While it didn’t surface over the spring tour, the standalone version that opened Camp Bisco VI is probably the strongest standalone with Allen. In the fall tour, 10/16 is a particularly strong version (flying slightly under the radar due to a lack of available soundboard) and 11/1 contains the first jam into the beginning of the song with Allen, and since 4/4/02.\r

B&C was only played twice in 08, although 4/19/08’s monster inverted version (first inversion with Allen and first since 7/23/03) is a must-hear. After a single performance each in the winter tour and spring tour of 09, B&C was played six times in the four months from 10/3/09 to 1/28/10. Each of those 6 versions is inverted. In the post-wristgate era, B&C rarely produces a memorable jam, with two glaring exceptions: the stellar and spacey 2/3/17 B&C > Voices > B&C, and the monster dyslexic beginning that opened the second set of 10/19/20.\r

The first debut of 1998, Mindless Dribble signalled an important shift in the band’s style and songwriting maturity. It’s challenging lyrics and aggressive style placed it in contrast to the faux-hippie neo-psychedelia of 97-95.

The first few performances of Dribble were completely free of improv, but within a little more than a month the band was beginning to carve out the song’s nascent jam section. There is a tremendous observable growth throughout the year, with at least one must-hear version, 12/30/98 (also noteworthy as the first "happy" Dribble). Other noteworthy early versions include 4/18/98 and 5/2/98.

The song became a major jam vehicle in 1999, the year where most of the strongest versions can be found. The jam section remained fairly standard throughout the year, with a few notable deviations, e.g. the demented, primal 10/28/99 and the fairly blissful 12/30/99 (another "happy" Dribble). The song remained strong through 2000, with noteworthy versions including 10/31/00 (the longest version to date) and 10/6/00, in which the chord progression that eventually gave rise to The Big Happy, Highwire, and I Remember When was debuted.

Dribble remained a strong selection in 2001, with the split-up "happy" Dribble from 3/31/01 widely regarded as one of the best. The song also underwent some important developments in this year. On 4/20/01 (fittingly) the “dub” version of Mindless Dribble was debuted, a part of the larger trend of dubbed versions of Biscuits songs that swept up both I-Man and Floodlights during April 2001. Later in the year, the song became the vehicle for the composed jam that would eventually become known as Strobelights and Martinis. Beginning on 9/1/01, and continuing through the month, every Dribble (with the exception of 9/21/01) would bear the hallmarks of this jam. The section was briefly reprised again in April 2003 and occasionally after Strobelights was debuted as its own song.

Although Dribble remained a staple of the catalog, its appearance grew less frequent in 2.0. It was never shelved, and was often split up to keep it interesting. When not split up, Dribble often fell into predictable patterns that made it less interesting than it had been in the 1.0 era (though exceptions to this rule exist--most notably the Red Rocks Dribble of 5/29/10).

Dribble continued to be a common presence throughout the setbreak era, being played, on average, around once every five or six shows (the striking exception to this is in 2018, when, excluding the dub version from Camp Bisco, Dribble was only played once the entire year). The song had a major renaissance during the "Setbreak is Over" tour of fall 2019. 11/16/19 and 11/17/19 each feature half of a strong split version, and arguably the strongest full version played with Allen took place on 12/13/19.

It's the bass melody toward the beginning, which is a recurring theme on
all three instruments throughout. You can play it as is on guitar, but
it would definitely not be the ideal position. I leave it to you to
figure out what would be.

Debuted at the tail end of 1998, Waves is one of the final songs of the Hot Air Balloon rock opera (third to last by debut order and second to last chronologically). Like most of the opera, it is a high water mark for the band both lyrically and compositionally. It is also the first Biscuits song to debut with a defined trance jam. Both versions from 1998 are remarkably strong.\r

Although it was one of the last Hot Air Balloon songs to debut, with the finished version first appearing 12/29/98, an instrumental passage that would later be incorporated into Waves was performed as Road Song four times in 1998, for the first time on 2/21/98 and as late as 6/4/98. All four versions were played before any song from the finalized opera had debuted. \r

Waves was the most played song in 1999, a year which saw the band continue to develop and use Waves in inventive ways. The song was split up for the first time the third time it was played, 1/18/99, in a spectacular Waves > Vassillios > Waves sandwich. It was performed dyslexic for the first time on 3/21/99 (Waves > Run Like Hell is particularly worth hearing) and inverted for the first time at the first Camp Bisco on 8/21/99 (the entire Shimmy > Waves (><) > Shimmy is worthwhile, but Waves > Shimmy is especially excellent).\r

The song was a massive vehicle for high speed trance jams in the winter and spring of 1999, with numerous standout versions including the 35 minute juggernaut from 2/3/99. Other excellent versions from this era include 3/13/99, 3/27/99, 4/9/99, 5/1/99, 5/6/99 and 6/5/99. In the summer and fall, the song regularly began to feature a dub jam. Waves had incorporated dub jams before, notably on 2/3/99 and 2/20/99, but after the inverted version from 8/21 it became a mainstay. Some excellent versions from this era include 8/21/99, 9/14/99, 10/9/99 and 10/22/99.\r

Waves remained a strong jam vehicle through the rest of 1.0. In 2000, a year with considerable dub influence, Waves reverted back to a trance vehicle. It soon became one of the most frequently inverted songs. 10/14/00 is one of the strongest inverted versions ever, and 11/2/01 notably opened with a “Koyanisqaatsi Jam” > inverted Waves, the first time a show opened with a jam into an inverted song. Important versions from post-1999 1.0 are multitudinous, including 10/14/00, 10/26/00, 11/2/00 12/27/00, 4/7/01, 4/28/01, 9/1/01, 11/2/01, 3/8/02, 10/2/02, 8/15/03, and 11/26/03. \r

When Allen joined the band, Waves remained a rotation staple and an important jam vehicle. On 11/8/06, the audience voted for a Waves encore; this was the first time a standalone Waves was played in the encore slot. There aren’t many standout versions from the year, but 11/19/06 with Magellan teases, and the fantastic Waves/Crickets mashup from 12/30/06 (the first setlist written by Allen, and what a setlist it is), are both standout versions. Similarly, for being such a strong year for the band, 2007 has something of a dearth of excellent Waves. 5/20/07 stands above the rest, but the song was grossly underutilized in 07.\r

The lull continued into 08, with a few uninspired ending only versions at the beginning of the year, before a massive exploratory inverted version on 3/22/08 in Denmark. The April shows at the Nokia saw the first split inversion of Waves, with the middle played on 4/11/08 and the ending and beginning played on 4/12/08. After only one performance between April and December, Waves closed out the year strong, with two stellar performances at Holidaze (12/14/08) and the Nokia (12/28/08).\r

The momentum built at the end of 2008 continued into 2009, easily the strongest year for Waves in a decade. It was often played middle only, including such standout performances as 1/31/09, 2/13/09, 2/27/09, and, most significantly, 4/24/09, 6/4/09, and 12/31/09.\r

Waves remained a regular in the rotation through the rest of 2.0 and the setbreak era (appearing 2-6 times per year). In 2015, Waves was played as a split inversion again for the first time since 09, and was played that way off and on for the next couple of years. It hit another period of growth in 2016, with standout versions from 3/26/16 and 7/15/17.\r

In the post-setbreak years, Waves continued its upward trajectory, appearing 8 times in 2021 and 2022 and 10 times in 2023 (the most appearances in a single year since 2010). The 2021 versions are particularly strong, with the fall seeing a return to the looser, dubby style in which the song was played in fall 1999. The 9/19/21 version features a distinct Gamma Goblins jam (complete with Alan Watts samples) and 11/21/21 is perhaps the best standalone version played with Allen.\r

Waves has remained a staple of the band’s catalog since its debut. It was played on average every 2.6 shows in 1999, and never left the catalog for more than 23 shows, when Barber broke his wrist in 2010. The longest gap otherwise was 21 shows in 2013.\r

The median debut of the Hot Air Balloon (The Overture, Fiddler, Voices and Mulberry’s debuted before, while The Very Moon, Eulogy, Waves and Hot Air Balloon debuted after), Bazaar is very arguably the technical high-water mark of the entire opera. The composition consists of a slow intro riff evocative of Middle Eastern styles of music, a faster instrumental section, a verse chorus combo, a very slow breakdown and bridge verse, a second faster instrumental section, a second verse and chorus, the same fast instrumental section from the intro, a third verse, and a closing riff reprising a section from Above the Waves. Due to its rigid and relatively complex composition, it is rarely played and even more rarely jammed. Over its history, the “jam section” in Bazaar Escape has moved multiple times.

The debut of Bazaar Escape, like the other Hot Air Balloon songs, occurred at the tail end of 1998, on 11/14 at Carnegie Mellon. The debut version was considerably more adventurous than most versions; it is jammed into out of an unfinished Boop. For the next few months, an intro jam was the most improv fans could expect from Bazaar Escape. It was more frequently either played as a standalone, or, on special occasions such as performances of the full Hot Air Balloon opera, segued into Mulberry’s Dream by way of a composed bridge lifted from Voices Insane.

Although it continued to be played primarily as a standalone in 1999, there were significant developments to the song. On 1/28/99, for the first time, Bazaar Escape was outro’d. The jam emerges from the Waves instrumental section and slowly evolves into an Aceetobee intro. Less than a month later, Bazaar Escape was outro’d a second time, this time prior to the Waves section. Unlike the first outro, this jam maintains the high energy level of the ending of Bazaar Escape and evolves into a type two vehicle.

For most of its history, any jamming on Bazaar Escape took the form of an outro or (more typically) an intro jam. It was split up twice in 1999. The first, 5/11/99, was part of a very scripted Hot Air Balloon opera show, and all the segues around the song were jamless (the song was split seamlessly in the middle of a verse). The second split version was performed as part of the very different “Spagopera” of 10/28/99; the segue out of Bazaar is jamless, but the jam back into the ending is spectacular. Here, the split in the song takes place in the slow bridge, preceding the “Corrinado hides down an alley” verse.

After a whopping 37 performances in 1999, Bazaar Escape became a rarity. Its first performance in 2000 was 6/27/00 with Jordan Crisman on bass. After this performance, it was played five times in the fall tour and once more over the New Year’s run. The most significant of these was 11/24/00 at the Trocadero, which was a jammed out extravaganza: it has a solid intro jam out of Shimmy and is split up, this time out of the fast instrumental section before the final verse. This would be the jam section in Bazaar for almost all future versions. Although the standard was always a jamelss standalone, Bazaar was jammed out on a few other memorable occasions in the latter half of Sammy’s tenure, including 4/4/01 (one of only two three-part versions) and 7/26/02 (the midpoint of the famous “almost palindrome” set).

Bazaar became increasingly rare in the final years of 1.0, played only 7 times from 03-05. Allen took his first stab at the song at Camp Bisco V, 8/25/06, segued out of the first inverted Spaga. This bold setlisting signaled that a more adventurous approach to Bazaar was to come, and almost none of the versions from 06-08 were true standalones. It was used as the landing pad to a massive Dribble outro on 11/2/06, as the meat of a palindrome (and out of a Moshi-Fameus jam no less) on 11/10/06, and, perhaps most memorably, as the three-part centerpiece to the massive second set from 12/31/06, complete with New Year’s countdown.

The golden age of Bazaar Escape continued into 07. Its first appearance was 5/17/07, which featured a gorgeous ambient outro jam into Robots. Other significant appearances over the summer include 7/8/07, in which it was used to sandwich the opening segment, and 7/19/07, the first and so-far-only inverted version. Almost every version from the fall tour was jammed out and split up, usually across multiple dates.

The first Bazaar of 08 is considered by many to be the definitive version. It is segued into from Rockafella, has a gorgeous psychedelic space jam in the usually very staid breakdown, and a fantastic main jam. Unlike many others from the era, it is not split. Bazaar was played ending-only two more times in 08 (and ever), 4/12/08 and 6/9/08, and a jamless standalone on 12/11/08 signaled the end of the golden age of Bazaar.

After 08, the jamless standalone Bazaar once again became the norm, and the song became once again a perennial rarity. It was last jammed out of on 4/26/13, last jammed into on 4/22/16, and has been relegated to a once-every-couple-of-years bustout.\r
