The Caterpillar jam starts with a fairly straightforward midtempo jam. This doesn’t do a whole lot for me. Humu has some miscommunication. Around the 15-minute mark, Magner is clearly trying to lead the band to a specific chord progression, and nobody is really coming with him for a good minute or two. Finally around the 17-minute mark, Brownstein seems to be coming on board. Despite these miscommunications, they mostly salvage this into a really solid Caterpillar ending. Overture is meh. Fiddler is standard.
Shelby doesn’t really lead anywhere interesting in this version. I love the Shelby/City/Rose pairing, but this just isn’t that good, nor is the return to Shelby. The first jam in Waves is a pretty generic trance jam. Not much going on here. The jam out comes from the middle section, which is always neat, even if this is pretty milquetoast as well. With that said, the SBMC jam has a multi-thematic jam in it that’s really nice. The first theme has a solid groove, and the second has a two-chord theme reminiscent of Abyss’ second section. This is probably the first jam of the show I legitimately enjoyed, and I enjoyed it a lot. The jam out of B&C also has two themes, however this doesn’t work as well. The first theme out of B&C is more of a typical jamband theme, with the second featuring Allen’s e-kick in more of a typical dance jam.
The Robots 1 jam kinda feels like a slowed down Caterpillar ending jam for part of it. The progression is nice, but I’m not blown away by the jam itself. The portion that leads into Story is somewhat predictable. The jam out of Story has some interesting stuff going on from Magner. I don’t even know that I’d call this good, but it’s at least got an interesting feel to it. I don’t really care about the rest of this jam. Munchkin has a solid dance jam. No reinventing the wheel going on here, but it’s solid. As they get closer to the Ladies transition, they land in a great groove. The Ladies jam has a really neat Blissco jam in it. This is high energy and has some great interplay between Magner and Barber.
Highlights: SBMC*, Munchkin*, Ladies*
