{Robo.... Gespacho at Slayerville}
soft warning: lots of "fluff" talk by me here. Apologies in advance. Sometimes the sativa gets a hold of my cerebrum.
sound problems: there a few bad glitches here and there but the MEMPHIS in particular is unlistenable. VERY loud glitches of the worst kind. I put the audience sourced MEMPHIS in it's place, it's that bad. If you have a totally clean SBD, PLEASE!!!! email me: skyscoutATliveDOTca thx!
This is definitely a power show from '04. For one, the SBD sound is delicious...truly A+ sound. Very clear, crispy, huge soundscape, just enough crowd cheer and the vocals are stupendous, MINUS the problems mentioned above. Pretty much MEMPHIS. Of course 2004 has the monster new year's show as well as Jan 2 & 3 , Sept 5 (that 2nd set!) , May 7 Albany was very good too. Perhaps not as many A / A+ shows but the ones that kick ass REALLY kick ass. But that new year's show is damn hard not to say it tops the tops.
Firstly, let's just smile at this setlist. With justice!! Little Betty Boop ~> Svenghali , Svenghali ~> Little Betty Boop, Aceetobee, Kamaole Sands ~> Pygmy Twylyte ~> Kamaole Sands
Boop is very much in the '99 Wetlands style of ecstasy. Lyrics > 10 minutes of chain jamming that ooooozes bliss. Everything is just working so nicely. The ZONE, yes, that's the ticket. All night they are in the FLOW STATE(mostly). Gorgeous transition to the Sven ending....perfect selection. Sven (beginning >>> ) only the Biscuits do this. Greatest band in the world since Johnny Cash smoked hash. NUGS (or disclogic or sunrise i forget) has both Svenghali's as one 20 minute song which I think is the right way but what do I know. It's simply a 2 second continuing pause as they embark into the 1st half. What can we say? A good Sven is a good Sven. (wow, Pace, that's deep :) I like when Barber and Mags share lyrics, it's a nice harmony. The reggae section is pretty spiffy simply by the way Marc plays his bass because you'll see it opens up a huge canvas for Mr. Mags to play with his organ. Crunch! Speed of Light untz for the rest of the tune Boop (ending) time for one last Barberino push to end this very cool section. AC2B [oLD SkOol] whenever I hear this tune, every time, I get taken back to the awesome Crystal Ballroom, Portland OR in the fall of '01 as it ended the show. It wasn't the longest but every single person was moving in a sea of people absolutely losing their minds, jumping up and down, sideways, spinning. I get real emotional with this tune. That was a very special time. I don't even know how to communicate this. Just pure Disco Biscuits magic. I think that left coast tour in the fall of '01 swept up the most amount of west coast fans ever. That was the stasis point...it all changed that fall. Any-freakin-way, this is a beautiful version for sure. A lot of it is tastefully mellow and a tapestry of psychedelic goose-pimples. Such command. At 12:49 Marc plops down some crazy, loud bombs that shatters a few eardrums. A deluxe game of tag. No one is getting in each other's way at all. It's groovy hot potato time. With 10 minutes left, they slowly ramp things up...Sammy demands it. And the kick drum seconds that emotion. Can't wait to see how they climb this last mountain. It takes a bit the end is quite satisfying. I have to give Brownie the MVP in this tune. What a conductor. Sands - a tad mundane and dare I say messy until near the 10 minute mark. 2004 is a story of 70% killer and 30% filler. Back to the show: they slow it down and there is a familiar tease by Magner here but I can't put my nose on it. The rest are some synth chords on repeat. Not the best KS to be honest. Pygmy - always a welcomed choice. A good wake up call as well after the lackluster KS. The 4:40 jam is fantastic! They omit the 2nd verse for a jam...a good jam. At first it's call and reply with Magner and Barber until the deep voiced man with the deep chords thumps his way in with such tasteful input. Less is more here. Not the most complex solos by Jon but this minimalism really works tonight. No drag race a la 1998 but slow and steady is just as heady. One of the big reasons I love this show is the pace. This is 2nd home, the Starland and you're sleeping in your bed tonight, all is good, let's chill until we don't need to.
Set 1:: 7.70 / 10
Set 2: [Magellan, M.E.M.P.H.I.S. ~> 42 ~> I-Man] 4 songs at 20 minutes a piece including a 42 = 420
Magellan - Marc is on fire and Barber is singing with more pizazz than usual. Must have been a good halftime. I would love to hear a Magellan jam into a Mindless Dribble of power proportions...know of any? Near 10mins in Magner plays this pretty cool DJ scratch thing as they enter the rough seas. Cool ending jam. M.E.M.P.H.I.S. - phish= pimpin' ho's in style eh! Very tight, chilled and memorable but my copy has MAJOY glitches that make it impossible to listen to. moving on..... 42 is exactly what we needed. Spicy. Nice tribal beat surrounds Magners solo at the halfway point. Pretty damn cool I-MAN! the sound is terrible. Will re-analyze with the crowd source.
Set 2::: 7.95 / 10 without sound problems 3 / 10 with the critters
Have you had your Northern Lights cannabis this summer? Please check your local shops / fellow growers for there is an influx of the "REAL" N.L. #4 this past month so be on the look out on the east coast as well as the Pacific NW.
Peace & Nugs, Happy Trails...

This was my first Disco Biscuits show. It showcased the creativity of this band at the time, when put up against other top and mid tier touring jam acts. Going beyond just seging songs to somthing more akin to a live remix involving multiple songs. The Boop >dyslexic Sven> Boop has a lot of distinct jams and sections, and is what I would consider a perfect introduction for me to this band. The rest of the show is interesting and high-energy. Lots of energy in the room all around with Sammy's impending departure. Great versions of some of their most classic songs, I would highly consider giving it a listen. 4.6/5 IMO
