The Magner ballad Spy makes its first public appearance since the 3/31 debut. Waves segues into the beginning of Munchkin—the first time these songs are combined in this way—and makes use of the fact that the two jams sound so similar. Nevertheless, the jam is strong and the segue into Munchkin is probably the strongest yet. Munchkin has a pretty dark and infectious jam, with Magner making liberal usage of the droning fall 2000 trance synths. 7-11 makes its first appearance of the year, and is reworked. The lyrics are largely the same as they would be for all the 01 versions. No towel jam. The trance jam is a powerhouse right out of the gate. It builds to a gorgeous Basis peak, and then drop segues into perennial 1999 cover The Thieving Magpie, which is well-executed.
2/5. The extended jamless compositions at the beginning and end hurt the score. Nevertheless, this is a great starter set, and Munchkin and 7-11 are both worth repeat listens.
Stray Observations: Excluding private shows, this is the first appearance of Spy since 3/31/01 (a gap of 35 shows), of 7-11 (a gap of 81 shows) and of Magpie since 12/30/99 (a gap of 99 shows).
Track Notes
- S1Munchkin Invasion
Though it is more blissful than many of the spring versions, there is nevertheless a strong Magner presence to this Munchkin that gives the jam a distinctly F2K feel.
- S17-11
7-11 returns to the catalog after nearly a year of absence and quickly establishes itself as a trance-fusion powerhouse. The pace never slackens, and the jam builds from barely restrained ferocity to a crushing Basis peak.
