<> The chiropractor show. This is a non-stop head boppin' show. Pure happy dance fever. Your neck and feet will need attention; the funk is strong in this show...slow n' steady brings the heady. <>

[ in search of a glitch free SBD; are there any clean copies anywhere? This recording has lots of errors throughout the show unfortunately. Bad cables, loosened connections, interference, hot levels....who knows? ]

Perfect first set. This is the exact tempo and approach I love from this era but in this show / set in particular. IMO, you can't really start a show on a more consistently funky and technically perfect DnB than this 1st quattro, especially GIG jamout ~> Sven ~> tureOver. If this isn't an all time Sven then I'm deaf. Take a listen to the great Dr. Sammy at 10 minutes in to this Overture. He and Mr. Mags are having quite the psychedelic percussive tango. This whole set sees Barber at his most active and nimble...the dude doesn't stop for a second...like a permanent session of chordal warm-ups and string-skipping exercises. If it isn't a solo, it's a long rhythm section. The segue and opening intro into Crix is more of the same magic. Meanwhile Magner!? perfect space themes while they all hover and get ready for a take off, eh. Sammy is doing his best Buddy Rich on all the stimulants impression throughout. Brownie? he learned his lesson and made the correct decision to stay aligned with the mission, practice like a mf and be all in. The results speak for themselves.

Btw, the second set, although not as poppin' fresh as the 1st is still pretty great. Floodlights has a nice jam. The encore is very good. But the combo of the great Fiddler plus an enormous Basis (imo) makes this much more of a balanced show than what some deem a mostly a one set quality show. Dare I say this Basis is better than the Irving Plaza version from 11-11? yes sir. Crazy. 40 minutes of craziness. The opening 9 minutes of foreplay alone is crispy. Good tension by Barber here. At 10:20 the atomic fuzz bomb drops as they seamlessly continue to an odd section not unlike a Saturday morning cartoon improv. Both Barber's guitar and Magner's keys sound almost identical here. The final 10+ minute jam starts in a mellow mood, simple DnB with nice backing effects by Magner.
It must be said, I think Magner is the absolute MVP in this Basis. Yes Barber is great too of course but Magner never adds more than the present moment needs. He knows less is more is this version as well. Gene Yuss. This Basis crescendo is not as explosive but like the rest of this version, stays in the magical realm through it's minimalism.

Track Notes

  • S1
    Grass Is Green

The rare Grass is Green outro finds a life of its own before Sammy kicks up the tempo and introduces the breakbeats, from which point an excellent Svenghali intro develops.

  • S1
    Svenghali

In an era positively overflowing with excellent dnb jams, this one still manages to stand out as one of the best, and for good reason. There are two distinct themes, the first a more traditional dark dnb build and the second a more experimental vehicle.

  • S1
    The Overture

A pretty standard dnb vehicle until Sammy begins to signal the transition into Crickets. A masterfully executed segue into Crickets develops.

  • S1
    Crickets

Perhaps the first important Crickets first jam. The jam weaves in and out of the Crickets theme, never venturing too far outside of it, but beginning to push the envelope a bit, until Magner delivers a decisive synth line at 12:30 to signal the move towards the peak.
