Johnny Barber Komono.
The best Yakitori in Humboldt. They were paid in prawn.
___SET 2 [1 through 4] ___ the whole show must be heard, I'm just putting set 2 under a microscope because I love it so.
Blessed with a SBD and then remastered by the man of Steele a while later. I remember having a 4th gen of this SBD in 2001 and it was dolbied to death.
Typical 1.0 fire. I especially like the 2nd set, getting an hour out of House Dog and Verymoon then an equally powerful Waves and Spaga. The HDPF comes out ABLAZE! 6 minutes in they enter the void that beautiful jam we usually get but with a little extra mustard. The second jam is more subdued and wandering until around 13:30 when Dr. Sammy prescribes the tune a doubling of the beat for a good while. Mags tastefully, patiently repeats the 360 synth groove as the BnB section gets into full gear. Back to single hi-hat it gets downright creepy psychedelic. Very nice mood here. Lots of good improv fusion passages. It leads to this standalone ending a sideways crescendo into "City Boy's Outta Of His Mind, OH YEAH..... fuckin A version. ps- the stage banter is great. this place is small. {{ HDPF }} "House Dog" 28 minutes of INCREDIBLY original, psychedelic, fresh Biscuits. Madness. I truly believe this HDPF was the point of stasis for the song. The way this tune morphed into the grand expression it would become for the rest of '99 through '02 starts right about here. "....do yourself a favor...."
'Verymoon'. The vocals are well mixed tonight. So much energy and excitement as Jon and Mags sing it down nicely.
The end of the story is at around 6:30 of this 25 minute version...we have lots to play with ahead of us. Slight Barber peak jam at 9 minutes, he's on it full steam until the jazz funk section comes on around 2-3 minutes later. A disco groove of sort takes us through the castles, moats and battleships for a good while. Nothin' too grand, just a steady groove until a light bulb appears above someone's head. Crying, whaling and eerie yells can be heard coming from Magner as Barber starts his expression, which will take us to ~>>
~>>'Basis Fakeout' !! oohh mama, what a great 4 minute segue! The tension is A+ you're convinced it's coming and coming large and just when the huge drop-in occurs, the air balloon pops and we all fall into ~>>
~> 'ATW' I cheated, a 10 minute Waves? Ok then, let's see. Wow. After the lyrics there is an ultra cool back and forth section between the bass and guitar, then keys and guitar while Marc plays a damn cool harpsicord sound on the bass with full plucking. Lovin' this groove....very trippy. Magner rules this Waves undoubtedly. He creates all sorts of alarm calls, record scratching. It's the shit! ~~>>
~> The sirens alarm the arrival of Spaga's ultimate battle returns from the 1st. That's how you win the maiden's heart. No bluepill nonsense here :) A very nice Hammond like groove leads us to the last 3 verses where Magner really puts his heart into it. A great mind's eye.
Set 2 ; section 1: 8.5 / 10.
Of course as a whole this show rocks with a great 'MEMPHIS' as well as an orgasmic 'Mindless Dribble~>ending the Eugene 'Morph' in style. On this tour, don't forget the night before at the WOW Hall, 9-29 Seattle with my favorite 2nd set of the year! as well as the Boulder show on the 24th (although the 2 best tunes get a tape flip as it was taped analog "Mindless' and 'HDPF" ; I cannot explain the magic from the "Dribble jam through 'Helicopters' unreal)
-Sometimes I think I'm too picky. Then I watch my dog look for a place to shit.-
