Inarguably one of the longest songs in the Biscuits catalog, 42 features repetitive trancey guitar riffs and catchy synth hooks, cryptic lyrics, and the potential for a powerful peak that, at times, would cause even the most seasoned vets to incorrectly call Run Like Hell. 42 alienated some fans at first with its lengthy verses and slow pre-choruses, and at its first performance, 4/3/03, the only jam was a short and very type one solo. The band did not waste any time fleshing out 42, however: it was segued into the first performance and split up by its fifth, 4/16/03--into Run Like Hell, unsurprisingly. By 4/26/03, which featured a standalone 42, the song had a reliable jam section. It was inverted for the first time on 7/26/03, a show which features numerous other setlist innovations such as the second inverted Aceetobee, the first three-part Buddha, and the first split unfinished Shimmy.

The band continued to flesh out 42 for the remainder of Sammy’s tenure, but it wasn’t until Allen joined the band that the song’s full potential as trance juggernaut was realized. It was played twice over New Year’s Run 2005, and nineteen times in 2006 (the most times played after 2003). The song quickly became a centerpiece of the band’s spacey psychedelic sound of 06-07. Important versions include 5/4/06 (mainly for the jam into it but a solid full version as well), 11/22/06, and 6/9/07.

If the song fared well in the early era of 2.0, it was perhaps at its peak in the high-energy later years of 2.0, late 08-early 10. Numerous high-energy, exploratory versions abound from this era, such as 12/27/08, 2/15/09, 4/18/09 (widely regarded as the best standalone version), and 6/6/09.

42 remained a staple of the band's catalog through the setbreak years, with a brief renaissance in 2017-2018. 6/1/17 is a powerful 2009-esque version, while 10/20/18 and 12/29/18 recall more experimental early versions.

When the song first debuted, it didn't have a name, and a group of fans took to calling it "Splattums" (a description of what happened to your brain when you listened to it). After the band gave the song it's official name, those same fans refused to call it anything but Splattums and continued to label it as such on recordings. Eventually, the band wrote Crickets, and added the "Lookout, splattums!" line in the chorus in the hopes that it would confuse people just enough to force the fanbase to start calling this song Svenghali.
