{don't use your 'skip/search' button on this show because of the legendary show the following night...it's packed full of magik} don't forget, these Texas shows were opened by the great Bonobo, which they stated really got them geeked up and inspired for these said shows.
[C Pile] average to good::: Park Ave., Tamarin, Pimp Blue, World is Spinning
[B Pile] very good::: Spacebird, Morph(damn good), K.Mitts
[A Pile] top notch / best of lists / legendary -Sound One ~> Tempest ~> Sound One -Shem-Rah Boo ~> Hot Air Balloon ~> Minions ~> _________ > Hot Air Balloon ~~ Can I start with this ''Shem-Rah Boo!? My Lord, was this played by psychedelic angels on opium? The choice to back up the beautiful airy slow tempo ambient psychedelia through the middle part with gorgeous xylophone, marimba & vibraphone beats is unreal. It's dark and delicious while being soft and welcoming all at once. Like a religious summoning jam. It ends with hope and a bright future, a very sympathetic feel good ending into>>>>> [epic Shem.] (2-13 Denver "Shem" better? no way Jose.)
Into ''HAB'' while half the band is still in Shem is why they are in a different dimension this fall of '09. Georgeous Magner grand piano intro. Someday I will learn the guitar chords to the change right before the lyrics ("In the light of the moon, too soon...") it feels soooo good. Here comes the jam! ....''in a Hot Air Balloon''....Oh Barber, I don't know if this solo is with the green machine guitar but it's a perfect 50/50 fuzz/strat sound. Didn't he drop it in the water and like the sound that the accident created? something like that. The cathedral sounds of Mr. Mags envelop the room as Barber gets a triplet and repeats...and the xylophone is back :):):) Double snare beat + distortion + bubbly bass + disco synth = INCREDIBLE final groove as they shake hands with .....
'Minions' - entering on the remnants of the Hot Air Balloon landing safely. I must admit, ''Minions" is a favorite. It was my exes favorite(RIP) and she saw a lot of them with me, almost always eyes closed with a tear forming. Especially this 18 minute version as well as Oct. 4 09 , Nov 20 09 and Jan 31 2010. If you are hot for a girl that's kind and true while not knowing the Biscuits, type these lyrics and give them to her. Don't claim ownership though you momo. It will unlock her heart...guaranteed. Back to Minions, we are the halfway medium tempo jam that just screams complete flow state Barber in no rush just playing what his heart tells him. This is pretty great as Brownie chunks the funk while "Floating Around" gets sampled a few times of course. I'm so happy Allen is in somewhat of an afrobeat mode with the 'exotics' he's using. Never stop learning you red-haired alien. The ending consists of the light show on all whites as Barber hits a few peaks until>>>>>
"Spacebird" - Ba Babababa...Ba bababa X6. Off to Ursa Minor. It's a real short version at around 9:30 minutes. It's a pretty repetitive jam that "wheel-jams' for most of the tune. I like the bass at the end, wow, it's en fuego. Not a bad 'Spacebird' but pretty much a formality.
"HAB" (jam>end) OK, Can I give this 2nd part of HAB to Mr. Brownstone!? Holy shit this ending / coda / reprise is funkier than Parliament circa '73 as far as the bass is concerned. Such a beautiful jam...wow. Up, up and away to the top of Patagonia. Love the half-step drop at 3:45 as they embark into "In a hot air balloon Corrinado flies over the sea for Leora today...."
HE GETS THE GIRL IN THE END!!!!!!!!!!! from cell to sky baby. or does he? read the book :)
To say that this segment of Shem through HAB is one of 2009's best is certainly saying something. And I'm saying it! :)
Set 1: Sound One ~> Tempest ~> Sound One
"Sound 1" took a while for me to really dig, but it eventually did...go to Sept. 12- 2001 ! that was the ONE. 1st jam at 4:20... eerie Castle organ synth sounds fill the room where the altar waits for the ultimate sacrifice. Just Kidding. Part 2 of said jam is so damn good, there are not many Sound 1 jams that sound this damn good. This segment is Allen's best triple of the night imo. He is a beast in these 3 tunes. Blissco jam ends the 1st section with a very happy, positive dance jam. 8 beautiful chords repeated 8 times in 2 different tempos. unreal Barber in his simplicity as it fades out to some synth and>>>>>
"Tempest" - holy moly what an intro. a violent or windy storm is right! This is pure Barberino shred city turning into distorted rhythms and sick, sick bass playing. How does Magner find those perfect tiny gaps to play his great keys for the correct amount of time. This is what touring all your life will do I guess. These boys chop wood like no other.
"Sound 1" ending - just please listen to Brownie and Mags here. a little 4D chess. Of course the guitarist gets all the chicks so he has final solo.
"Morph" - Is it really much different that any other good Morph from this era? Well no, not really but it's just like a feeling you get...a certain "je ne sait quois" Suck a nice funk jam underneath while Magner is in top form overtop laying down the chocolate syrup on top of the french vanilla ice cream after smoking herb all night. In a 2.0 FILLED with amazing Dusseldorfs, this one is definitely in the top half at least. Listen to 10:02 onwards on the NUGS version. Tip Top Magoo. If they had 10 more minutes, this woulda, shoulda, coulda.
