Yikes. Three standalone, jamless songs to start a show is less than ideal. KOTW, Bullets, and Spy are all jamless. The Helix jam hits a fantastic groove, and Brownstein/Magner have a great connection here that I enjoyed a lot. The breakdown around 7:45 is really awesome, especially the little riff that Barber comes up with. Awesome. Mulberry’s has two little type 1 jams, both of which are pretty forgettable here.
The HDPF first jam is the usual type 1 jam. Second one gets pretty far out there as the band struggles to move from 3/4 to 4/4 time. This gets dissonant, dark, and at parts straight-up weird. I like it, a lot. As the band drives toward Cyclone, Barber has some phenomenal guitar work. He comes up with a series of licks right before the transition to Cyclone that are really great. Cyclone jam has a part that sounds like it could be headed for some Blissco, but ultimately stops short. The rest of the jam is okay, but nothing standout. The jam in Boom Shanker is fairly short, and never really leaves the type 1 territory, but I enjoyed this a lot. This is what Boom Shanker ought to sound like. The Spraypaint jam begins with a very Blissco jam. This almost sounds like something the String Cheese Incident would play, and I mean that in the best possible way. This is really pretty, and the band goes from this happy-go-lucky jam flawlessly into a darker sounding dance jam. The Shelby jam has a little line from Magner at the beginning that almost sounds like the melody that would later become Air Song. It’s not exact, so this is very possibly a coincidence, but something I noticed. The jam itself is a little lackluster to me. This is mostly treading water until the peak, though the peak is very good. The Munchkin jam never lands on a cohesive theme. Magner does a call-and-response thing for a bit, and the band struggles to figure out what they want to do. The RLH finale is okay, though both of the jams are just too short for this to really connect solidly.
