A sure-to-please rowdy blues song about drinkin’, Barfly was a staple of the band’s frat party days and earliest tours. It made its way into the stylistic hodgepodge that was the band’s first studio album, Encephalous Crime, where it is the final studio track. Barfly follows a very predictable format from which it rarely deviates: verse, chorus, verse, chorus, keyboard solo, bridge, guitar solo, verse, chorus.

Barfly was played 40 times in 1998, more than any other year. It was in 1998 that Barfly was jammed out for the first (and only) time. On 6/4/98 an unfinished Barfly segued into a drum solo ended the show, and 6/5/98 opened with a long intro jam into Barfly (supposedly intended to complete the night prior, although it, too, is unfinished) jammed into the ending of Run Like Hell. Besides being the only jammed out Barfly, it also marked the first time the Biscuits finished a song from an earlier show.

Barfly became steadily more rare beginning in 1999. After appearing semi-regularly in the winter and spring tours, it was played only twice in the fall before being shelved for nearly a year between October 1999 and 2000 for a gap of 32 shows (what was then a significant absence). It was played four times in 2000 and then eight each in 2001 and 2002 (although this represented a decline in frequency). From 2003 to the end of Sammy’s tenure in 2005, Barfly was even more scarce.

Allen’s arrival brought with it a brief resurrection of Barfly, which was played four times in three months in the earlier part of the year. However, it was only played once in the fall, after which it went from rarity to holographic status. It was played only once in 2007, after a gap of 75 shows, after which it sat on the shelf for two and a half years or 197 shows (its longest absence) when it was played at the Bisco Power Mission on 3/21/10 with Sammy on guitar.

It was played only a handful of times in the setbreak era: twice in 2013, once in 2014, once in 2018 and once in 2019. It’s performance on 4/27/19 is perhaps the most interesting part of a sub-par show; it provides the landing pad to the second set segment, making it the first Barfly to be jammed into (in fact, played in any way besides standalone) since 4/3/02.

Awol’s Blues is a pretty standard early Biscuits blues tune. It is fairly unremarkable except for the fact that it was played so often, a whopping sixty times in 1997-1998. The band so loved this tune that it found its way onto Uncivilized Area, the final song on the album.\r

After a few performances in 1999, the last of which being 9/24/99, Awol’s Blues returned to the shelf, a relic of the bygone pre-Trance-Fusion days. It was busted out on three occasions. The first was 7/28/02, representing a gap of 225 shows (just one more than the current gap). It was performed a few more times and then sat on the shelf for 111 shows until a one-time performance on 9/3/04. After that it sat on the shelf for the rest of the Sammy days and well into the Allen era, when it was busted out for one final performance on 12/29/12 after 491 shows. The Biscuits have not performed the song since.\r
