The first Memphis jam is pretty typical Guitar God Barber, which is typically not for me, nor is it here. The second jam here is actually pretty decent. It’s almost exactly what you would expect from a Memphis > Basis pairing, but that’s not necessarily bad, and this is well-played. The Basis jam is pretty nice. They have this sort of uneven, off-kilter feel for a good chunk of the jam that I really enjoy, and the transition into the major key portion flows so naturally that it’s genuinely impressive. Caves is nice. They manage to turn this into a fairly interesting breakbeat jam. At parts I really thought this was going to head to a SBMC intro. Magner’s Rhodes-y patch really sounds like that’s where he’s going. Spraypaint never really leaves type 1 territory and is just okay.
The only thing I really care about from the second set is the Space jam, which is great. Really great. The rest of the set is a skip for me.
The AFOB jam begins with a midtempo disco jam, but turns into a great, upbeat trance jam. Unfortunately, this part of the jam really lasts only a minute or two before the transition to Orch. Damn. First Orch jam is okay, but never stretches its legs too far beyond type 1 territory. Second Orch jam never really feels like it gets going before it gets into the tom-heavy portion of the jam that transitions into Magellan. The rest of the show does nothing for me.
Highlights: Memphis (2), Basis, Caves, Space**
