One of many debuts of the storied 2007 Starland Ballroom run, Air Song, like many other debuts from 2/15/07, sat on the shelf for several months after its first performance before entering the rotation. It was a little over a year later, in the same building where it was debuted, that Air Song was played for the second time.
Air Song was played 17 times, on average roughly every 3.5 shows, in 2008. Although the first few versions were played as a standalone, it quickly developed into a jam vehicle and setlist juggernaut in the early days of 08. Early standout versions include 3/23/08 and 4/2/08 (the first split-up version). On 4/12/08 Air Song was inverted for the first time, and on 4/25/08 it was used to bookend a palindrome set. The remaining Air Songs of the year were played unfinished or full.
After 2008, Air Song became a much rarer occurrence. It was played only five times in 2009 (once every 20 shows on average), but all five versions are excellent. 1/16/09 saw the return of the inverted Air Song, which features a spectacular and unconventional jam back into Spacebird. On 4/4/09 it was used as the meat in a solid Voices sandwich. 6/27/09 might be the best known Air Song simply because of how legendary the segment is: Story > Pilin’ > Air Song > Story. The jam out of Air Song is one of two absolute must-hear jams from that segment, but the jam into it merits attention as well. 9/22/09 featured a four song second set with fantastic jams into and out of Air Song, and 10/10/09 featured an excellent Air Song sandwiched within House Dog.
After 2009 the quality of the average Air Song began to dip, while it still remained a rarity. Although it was never “shelved” (besides the time between its first and second performances) it became increasingly rare after 2011, played only once per year in 2012 and 2013, twice in 2014, once in 2015 and twice in 2016. After this, it had a brief resurgence, played three times in 2017 four times in 2018 (or roughly once every 9.3 shows, the most frequently since 08) and three times in 2019. 2023 was a good year for Air Song with 4 solid versions.

After the tepid response to Planet Anthem, the band continued to push out new material in summer and fall 2010 that would form the heart of their next album, Otherwise Law Abiding Citizens. The first of these songs to debut was Bombs, which soon established its role as a heavy hitter within the catalog. It was played within a massive medley for its debut at Camp IX, and for its sophomore performance at Dewey Beach (widely considered the greatest version). It has never been played standalone, is rarely followed by a comma in setlists (the last time was 3/27/11), and has only once been preceded by one (1/28/12). In 2024 it opened a set (3/30 Buffalo) & a show for the 1st time on (7/19) at the Secret Dreams Festival in Thornville, OH.
Bombs saw a resurgence during 2014, in which two versions (8/1 and 12/26) produced sprawling type two jams. 3/26/16 at the Capitol Theater is another much-loved recent version. Bombs has seen steady play since its debut, appearing at least once every year except for 2020. It is the only 2010 OLAC debut to not be shelved for more than a year.
