Ladies was first played by Electron on 8/18/00, debuted on the same night as the full Chemical Warfare Brigade opera, along with Floodlights, Shelby Rose and Confrontation. The lyrics are largely the same, but the structure of the song is slightly different: there are shouts of “give it up! give it up!” in the introduction and before the jam, and there is a brief synth jam in between the verses. The jam in this Electron version is also considerably slower and mellower than in Biscuits versions, and there is no peak; rather, the jam just resolves back into the same verse from the intro.

The first and only Biscuits version of Ladies in 2000 is tightened up considerably from the Electron version. It is much faster than the Electron version, and the peak has that much needed Barber “oomph.” Although slightly slower than modern versions, in all other ways the song is virtually indistinguishable.

Ladies was played a whopping 27 times each in 2001 and 2002, the years of the song’s first golden age. It was a staple of the early spring tour, and was mostly played standalone, although it was split on its second performance on 3/22/01 and segued into on 4/12/01 and 4/20/01. It was inverted for the first time at the Bisco Knights festival on 8/25/01. In the fall tour the song became a powerhouse, with standout versions including the set closing standalone on 9/8/01 and the massive inverted version on 9/22/01.

2002 was the year Ladies really took off. 4/25/02 is the first dyslexic version, and the standout version from the spring tour. The summer tour included many excellent versions, including 7/26/02 and 8/11/02, but the real apex for the song came in the fall tour, with two legendary versions on 10/4/02 and 10/18/02.

Ladies became less common after 2002, and although the 2003 versions aren’t as legendary as the late 2001 or 2002 versions, there are a couple with unmistakable merit, such as the unfinished 4/25/03 or the split-up 11/28/03 (which was a part of the fourth complete performance of the Chemical Warfare Brigade. Ladies was only played seven more times with Sammy after 2003.

When Allen joined the band, Ladies became a catalog staple once again. Its second golden age lines up nicely with the second golden age of the band overall, beginning in mid-2007 and lasting into early 2010. The Astronaut > Ladies (><) > Astronaut from 11/19/06 is arguably the first great Ladies with Allen, but the spectacular 5/27/07 Ladies > O Fortuna > Spacebird (><) > Ladies and the over 35 minute Ladies > Gangster from 10/23/07 definitively assured Ladies’ place in the pantheon of trance-fusion juggernauts.

Ladies remained a powerhouse staple through 08 (standout versions including 1/16/08, 4/18/08, 5/24/08, 6/13/08 and 12/30/08), but the song hit another level in 2009, when it was played 21 times (the most of any year since 2002). In a year of furious lightspeed trance jams, Ladies flourished. Notable versions including 2/15/09, 4/24/09, and 6/25/09 are hailed as some of the best ever. The song was played twice in 2010 before wristgate, on 1/29/10 and 3/17/10, and both versions are excellent.

Ladies remained a setlist staple in the setbreak era, and in addition to the numerous versions played during this time, the band frequently used a Ladies style jam to get from A to B in this era. In fact, the year where Ladies was most common was 2012, when it was played on average once every 3.3 shows. Notable versions from the setbreak era include the 1/26/14 Tractorbeam version, 3/26/16, 6/02/16, and 8/20/16.

In the post-setbreak era, Ladies continues to be a setlist staple. It is still frequently played inverted, although well-known exceptions include the set bookending 9/23/23 and the dyslexic 1/28/24 (part of a full set palindrome). Ladies is one of the most frequently played Biscuits songs, appearing on average once every five to six shows since its debut. It has only disappeared from the rotation for more than a dozen shows a few times, and never for more than sixteen shows. It is an indisputably important part of the Biscuits’ catalog.
