Review:
The Shelby opener is a very fun jam. Some of the more playful dnb I’ve heard over the tour. After the 7 minute mark, Magner begins to introduce some more heavy distorted synths. It forms the backbone of a raging psychedelic theme that builds up to a gorgeous blissful Shelby ending. House Dog breaks down into a spacey atmospheric jam, like many of the stronger versions from the tour. It stays in a tense theme for several minutes, and manages to feel very exploratory even though Brownie never strays too far from the House Dog bass line. The return to the peak riff is a glorious payoff. The Party Favor gets into some bizarre territory as well; around the 17 minute mark Barber switches on the muted distortion and Magner incorporates some amelodic synth effects. The jam creeps back towards Party Favor territory by way of an uplifting, exploratory passage. A very solid version with two above average jams. Lai is a solid version, with a cool Barber-led theme. The first jam in Aceetobee is a pretty standard, energetic build, but the second jam is nice and spaced out. It builds up to a Big Happy theme until Barber suddenly lays down the Aceetobee ending riff.
The second set opens with Story, which is a pretty standard version. The jam begins as funk, before it moves into melancholy trance around the 5 minute mark. It slowly builds to a triumphant ending. Shem-Rah has a short intro jam with some Gates of Hell action. The main jam sees Magner make liberal use of the acid synths. The jam breaks down into more blissful territory, almost sounding like a Down to the Bottom jam, and it builds on a triumphant theme up to a glorious Shem-Rah ending. After a little confusion in the composition, the MOTH MOTY is well-executed. Shem-Rah drop segues into Down to the Bottom. The Down to the Bottom jam is light and pleasant, until some more tense themes are introduced around the 7 minute mark. It continues to explore this territory, building up to a kind of Basis intro fakeout shortly before the track change. From here, the jam melts into a blissful Hope intro. Hope is pretty standard. It has a vague breakbeat style rhythm, and is mostly blissful until it builds to the ending. Grass is Green has a light airy theme that builds up to a strong ending. The two encores, Fiddler and Morph, are both standard.
Overall a pretty average show with only one real segue.
Highlights:
Down to the Bottom > Hope
The only segue of the show. The Down to the Bottom jam takes on a spacey, tense quality before building up to a Basis fakeout that breaks down into Hope bliss.
House Dog Party Favor
Both jams break the mold, and the first is especially experimental considering the limitations of that section. Great version.
Shelby Rose
Some of the most fun dnb jamming I’ve heard all tour. Magner develops an infectious theme and Barber brings it in for a beautiful ending.
Story of the World
Excellent standalone with a fist-pumping fun ending.
Stray Observations:
This is the first Texas Pussy since 9/25/99, a gap of 64 shows.
This is the first Shem-Rah Boo > Down to the Bottom pairing since 12/30/99, and the only one of the year.
